Sorry but my problem/question is difficult to condense.
1985 Winnebago Elandan
454 Chevy
P30 Chassis

Found a gas leak in one of the short rubber gas line hoses around the inline gas filter and Crossover valve (valve switches between aux tank (30 gallons) and main tank (60 gallons) by a dash mounted rocker switch.
Took Motorhome to my local Mechanic to have hose with leak replaced and also had all other hoses in the inline filter/crossover valve replacd.. Then drove aprox 100 miles to a campsite using the aux tank. Switched over to main tank for the return trip and ran out of gas after approx 30 miles even though the main tank was full (60 gallons).

Finally came to the conclusion that the crossover valve must not be working, had 5 gallons of gas delivered to my freeway location (cost-$65.00) put the gas in the aux tank, started the Motorhome and made it to a gas station where I filled the aux tank and made it home. Then took the Motorhome back to the Mechanic who replaced the crossover valve which he said was defective.
Finally to my delima. In the past the Onan Generator would only operate when the dash rocker switch was set to the MAIN tank. The Generator will now work on BOTH the Main and Aux setting which makes me wonder if the crossover valve is truly working or if I am now running off of the Main tank only regardless of the rocker switch being on the Aux setting. I asked the mechanic how he checked out the new valve to make sure it was now switching between the two tanks and was told "I put a clamp on one of the gas lines then changed tanks with the rocker switch and the crossover valve is working". It would seem to me that there would be enough fuel in the clamped line to allow the engine to start regardless of the rocker switch setting even if a line was clamped off. I am not comfortable with this method of checking the valve out and am hesitant to hit the road on another trip. Based upon what I have read in the owners manual I believe that there is only one gas line going to the generator and that gas line is from the main tank and that this line only reaches to a point above the bottom of the tank to assure that the generator does not run the main gas tank dry. I could never start the generator when the Main tank was less than a quarter full and could never start the generator off of the Aux tank. I am looking for a fool proof way of assuring that the crossover valve is functioning properly befor I go on another trip.

Sorry for this being so long.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions that you might offer.
Ken
