We have an Onan generator in our class A motorhome and are having difficulty keeping it running. We have cleaned the sparkplugs. It starts when pushing on the Start Button but dies as soonas one lets go of the Start Button. It hasn't been used for 16 months or more due to illness but is evidently getting gas or it wouldn't start at all. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Bob

I had the same problem with my Generac...it
turned out to be the carburetor. Once that was replaced, no more problems.
Don't know if this would be the same on an Onan.

My '99 Tradewinds Diesel Pusher has a Generac 3 cyl Diesel Generator (Japanese Engine). On many occasions, on starting it would run only when the Start Rocker Switch was held in. When you let go, the Engine would stop. I temporarly took the Low Oil Pressure Detector Switch out of the circuit. Voila - it started like it should. I Ran it through several start/run cycles. Now it works all the time. Try it. Good Luck.

It sounds to me your fuel shutdown seleniod isn't working like it is supposed to. Will probably need to be replaced. The start circuit keeps it closed when you are starting the gen set. When you let go of the start switch it is supposed to stay closed so the engine can run. When you let yours go it sounds like the switch opens and it isn't supposed to open until you hit the stop button.

Onen generators are very picky If everything is not just right they will not run right. Your problem is with the carb. Since it has sat for so long the gas that was in there has since evaporated and left a gummy or hard film. Nothing in there is getting the proper mixtures to run . What is happening is there is enough gas getting in to start but not enough to keep it running. When it shuts of it fills the bowl up enough to start again. Have the carb. rebuilt and that will fix your problem
