Cold room tests show that up to 40% of all engine wear occurs during cold starts.

Cummings Engine Company has stated that, while using petroleum-based 15w 40 oils, 95% of the wear in their engines occurs during cold starts.

Now if your using a block heater then you would naturally reduce the affects of cold weather wear, but what about your tranny and differential? Automatic transmissions sometime can fail from extreme cold temperatures with metal to metal contact because the fluid might not flow well enough to coat gear surfaces. Block heaters don't entirely help here until the warm radiator fluid heats the ATF through your tranny cooler.

I have seen videos of GM cold room tests where they cold soak engines to various temperatures and time how quick the oil circulates to the top of the motor on start up using petroleum oils and synthetic oils. The petroleum oil sometimes takes minutes, while the synthetic takes mere seconds.

Just some thoughts while your setting around the fireplace warming your bones.
